Between Alignment and Autonomy: Navigating the UK Adhesives & Sealants Market in an Era of Regulatory Uncertainty
Vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMO) is commonly used as a moisture scavenger in moisture curing silane terminated polymer systems to provide storage stability. Its inclusion in ECHA’s Assessment of Regulatory Needs (May 2025) underlines increased regulatory scrutiny and the need for VTMO free formulation strategies. Simple replacement of VTMO with an alternative scavenger often proves insufficient, particularly in highly reactive hybrid adhesive and sealant systems where moisture management is critical.
Omya and Momentive have taken a collaborative approach to create VTMO-free hybrid solutions. By combining novel low moisture mineral fillers with advanced silane moisture scavengers, it is possible to achieve stable formulations while conserving key mechanical and adhesive performance characteristics. This presentation demonstrates how controlled filler selection and selected silane chemistry work synergistically to deliver reliable processing and storage stability. The results highlight a practical path for formulators seeking regulatory ready solutions while maintaining adhesive performance.
