From Fossil to Bio-based: Scaling Renewable Chemistry in Adhesive Production
The adhesive industry is under increasing pressure to combine performance, supply resilience, and measurable climate impact reduction. This presentation will present a real industrial case on how renewable raw materials can be integrated into existing adhesive value chains at scale.
Using the strategic collaboration between Henkel and Sekab as a case study, the presentation will explore the transition from conventional fossil-based ethyl acetate to a fossil-free, bio-based drop-in alternative. The case demonstrates how renewable chemistry can be implemented in high-performance industrial adhesive applications without compromising technical requirements or existing manufacturing processes. Special focus will be given to value chain collaboration between raw material suppliers and downstream adhesive manufacturers, highlighting how such partnerships can accelerate innovation, improve supply chain resilience, and support customers’ climate ambitions. ([henkel.com][2])
The presentation will further address the commercial and strategic implications of replacing fossil-based solvents with renewable alternatives, including regulatory drivers, customer demand, Scope 3 reduction opportunities, and the business case for future-ready sourcing strategies.
This session aims to provide practical insights into how the global adhesive industry can scale bio-based solutions from innovation to industrial implementation.
